Good to know

Enjoy Waco History by staying at the Sturgis Inn. This historic home is 135 years old, built in 1887 by James N. Harris in a refine Victorian Style. The bricks were handmade from Brazos River sand. The walls are 13 inches solid with interior plaster. Many facets of the house are original to the house: The walls, roof, and most of the light fixtures. This house was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1971. At the Sturgis house, we have a view of the beautiful Historic, St. Mary's Catholic Church. Founded in 1869, the congregation erected its first sanctuary in 1870. The bell for the church was purchased in France and donated to the church in 1900. The tradition of the musical chimes can still be heard every hour. This house is within walking distance to downtown and located in the commercial district. It takes only 4 minutes to drive to Magnolia Market, also known as the Silos. It takes 7 minutes to drive to Baylor and it only takes 5 minutes to drive to McLennan County Court House. There are restaurants, retail stores, and other fun entertainment nearby for your convenience. If you want to just stay home and eat or play, we do have a big deck with a barbeque grill, fuse ball, two tables with chairs, and an outdoor sectional sofa with a fire pit table. We also have a big back yard and a ping pong table. If it rains, we have you covered with our downstairs sun room full of board games, checkers, chest game, and cards. In Waco, this house is affectionately known as the Sturgis house. Mr. and Mrs. James H. Sturgis bought this house in 1912. Three generations of the Sturgis family lived in this house, impacted Waco, and contributed to making Waco what it is now. The City of Waco dedicated a water fountain to Mr. and Mrs. James H. Sturgis, in front of City Hall for all their contributions to the city. This house was also purchased and restored in August of 1983 by Lyndon L. Olson, O. Charles Buenger, and Charles D. Olson to use as law offices. Lyndon Lowell Olson Jr. (born March 7, 1947) is an American business executive and diplomat. He served as U.S Ambassador to Sweden between 1997 and 2001. We have preserved as much history as we can, including furniture from the original era and some new furniture that looks like it came from that era. This house has five bedrooms: three bedrooms in the main house, one converted bedroom that used to be the carriage house for the horses, and one bedroom which was once the original servant quarters. The carriage house has a ramp and the main house also has a ramp to the first floor. All the bedrooms have a bathroom except for one bedroom in the main house. It shares the hallway bathroom, on the second floor. All the bathrooms in the main house have claw feet tubs.

Upon arrival they provided our group a lovely treat and made the check in process incredibly smooth! We truly felt at home here and were so happy to have used it as a location for part of our wedding party to get ready. The historic feel mixed with the incredibly thoughtful host made this place a 10/10. I would definitely recommend this place to others!

Our extended family stayed to celebrate a graduate from Baylor. The house was absolutely perfect for several families. The hosts were extremely flexible and gracious. They even sent a “nothing but bunt cake” for our graduate! The house was decorated amazingly for Christmas which made the stay even more special. Highly recommended for large groups or families looking for a great place to relax with tons of conversational space, board games, fire pits, etc.

This house was amazing. It was perfect for our family get away. Enough room for all 10 of us and with extra space. We played cards in the porch and sat around the fire pit for hours. It was a great experience!!

We absolutely loved staying at the Sturgis Inn! The house is beautiful and was more than enough space for our group of 10. Quick drive to campus and downtown spots. The extra touches truly made our weekend!

What a gem!!! Great location downtown. Charming with perfect attention to detail. This isn’t my typical style of decor which is why I adored this older home. What memories we made here with cousins and my Baylor son!

Amazing beautiful home, ample parking, great back yard, a home with character all it's own, TVs in every room, basically a commercial kitchen, lots of seating, and expansive back porch. plus the owners were very helpful, quick to response, and helped us out when our child left his teddy bear behind. 5-stars all around.

This place is amazing. The history of the home alone was intriguing. Also very close to Baylor and Magnolia - with 10 of us, we had a great time grabbing lunch at Union Hall so everyone got their craving. The Backyard was awesome Friday night and there are so many gathering spots lots of fun conversations on the porch, yet everyone also had their own space.

Some places are merely houses; others are homes the moment you step through the door. Sturgis Inn is the latter a house with a soul, thick walls that have heard a century’s worth of laughter and sorrow, and a history that lingers like the scent of morning coffee on old wood. Our family found refuge here at a time when we needed it most. Thanks to this home’s generous heart, its many rooms and its guest cabins, we were able to gather together, to hold hands, to whisper our final ‘I love yous’ to someone we cherished. It’s a rare gift, to have a place that allows both joy and grief to exist in harmony, wrapped in the warm embrace of history and hospitality. To those who keep this house standing, who preserve its past and open its doors for strangers to become family, we thank you. You gave us more than a place to stay. You gave us a place to say goodbye with love.
